Located near Enterprise Oregon, the Eagle Cap Wilderness area is in the Wallowa Mountains and the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Established in 1940 and included in the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1964, the Eagle Cap Wilderness area contains a total of over 350,000 acres. The Eagle Cap Wilderness was named after a nearby Peak in the Wallowa Mountains (once called the Eagle Mountains).
High alpine lakes and meadows, bare granite peaks and ridges, and awe-inspiring glacial valleys create most of the Eagle Cap Wilderness. More than 60 lakes, 35 miles of streams, and 30 summits higher than 8,000 feet are just some of the attractions that draw hikers and backpackers here every year.
The Eagle Cap Wilderness is home to a variety of wildlife including cougars, black bears, mountain goats, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, white-tailed deer, mule deer, and elk. A huge variety of vegetation can be found here as well. A noticeable difference in types can be seen at different elevations.
Nearby can be found hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, camping, and wildlife watching. In the winter backcountry skiing and snowshoeing is fairly common. There are over 530 miles of trails and over 45 trailheads contained here alone, all easily accessible from Wallowa Lake Vacation Rentals.
